About
This beguilingly tender, emotionally resonant, and boldly ambiguous narrative of a father and daughter’s seaside holiday is the award-winning directorial debut by British filmmaker Charlotte Wells. Mixing memory set in the 1990s, present day images and home-movie style documentation, Aftersun follows the loving relationship between young father (Paul Mescal) and his 11-year-old daughter (Frankie Corio) on a coastal holiday trip in Turkey. While they soak up the sunshine, an internal journey is at play for both of them, each going through their own coming-of-age realisations: the changes of adolescence and in the father’s case, wrestling with his inner demons. A beautifully constructed film, Aftersun is an incredibly thoughtful reflection and careful reassessment of the parent-child relationship.
