About
In this stylish, dystopian sci-fi by French New Wave director Jean-Luc Godard, humans are ruled by the technological devices of their own making: in Alphaville it’s a dictatorial, artificial intelligence Alpha 60. The super computer has outlawed free thought and emotions presiding over public executions for infringements such as weeping at the death of a spouse. Lemmy Caution, celebrated journalist-cum-detective from the ‘outlands’, infiltrates the futuristic city on a mission to eliminate the inventor of the computer Professor von Braun. His investigations lead him to von Braun’s beguiling and captivating daughter played by the ever-luminous Anna Karina. Eschewing conventions of outlandish sets and uncanny aliens, Jean Luc Godard instead sets his sci-fi in a near-identical world to our own examining the philosophical underpinnings of civilisation, the importance of freedom and the mystery of love.
