About
When small-time crook Jacqueline Wilson (Erica Gavin) is busted for trafficking drugs, she is sent to the horrid Connorville prison for 40 years. There, she must fight for survival against the cruel staff who undertake the bidding of Warden McQueen (horror icon Barbara Steele), while also plotting her escape.
After co-writing and -producing two hits for Roger Corman's New World Pictures, Jonathan Demme struck a deal to make his directorial debut for the studio too. With this electric 'women-in-prison' picture, he immediately made a splash, showcasing the verve and grit he would bring to later works like Stop Making Sense 1984 and his Oscar-winning The Silence of the Lambs 1991. The film also features a bluesy score from Velvet Underground legend John Cale.
