About
The fevered desire to conquer death rules over this hilariously squeamish body-horror by director Stuart Gordon. Oddball Herbert West (Jeffrey Combs), new to medical school, involves fellow classmate Dan Cain (Bruce Abbott) in a series of bizarre experiments concerning the re-animation of dead tissue, with the ambition to bring deceased humans back to life. Loosely based on the 1922 HP Lovecraft serial novelette 'Herbert West–Reanimator', the film garnered a large following through home-video viewing, spawning several direct and spiritual sequels, a musical and various comic book tie-ins. Notable for its practical special effects, satirical takes on Frankenstein-ian tropes, and mixture of sincere B-picture frights and laughs, this is an audacious and grotesque work that boldly confronts the limits of the human body.
