Sekar 2018

Graceful Sekar has impaired vision and lives with her loving mother. The two tend to a batik business carefully dying and printing textiles. When a suitor comes calling, both mother and daughter must come to terms with Sekar's desire for the promise of love and a life outside her childhood home. Writer-director Kamila Andini grounds her film in the tactile, lingering on shots of a hand caressing fabric in the breeze and the play of water on skin.

Married to an abusive husband, Maria wants better for her daughter who has just discovered young love. Bubbling under the surface, Maria holds a troubling secret that lies in her past. She finds refuge in the friendship of women who share this secret: the memories of sexual violence suffered at the hands of Indonesian soldiers during the invasion of Timor-Leste. Together these women build strength and resilience, talking and even laughing together. Memoria draws on real-life stories of survivors and is a powerful account by an Indonesian filmmaker reckoning with the sexual violence perpetrated by the Indonesian army when they invaded Timor-Leste.
