About
This screening will be introduced by Robert Hughes, Australian Cinémathèque.
Please note: this screening has been moved from its previously advertised date of Wednesday 28 August.
The Heartbreak Kid is a rarely-screened masterpiece from comedy legend Elaine May. It is a merciless portrait of egotistical salesman Lenny (Charles Grodin), who falls for the young Kelly (Cybill Shepherd) while on honeymoon with his new wife Lila (Jeannie Berlin, in an Academy Award-nominated performance). Working from a Neil Simon script, May delivers a hilariously vicious dismantling of male ego, turning the screws endlessly on the deluded Lenny, in this squirm-inducing classic of American cinema.
