The Silence of the Lambs is a chilling thriller that inaugurated the neo-slasher genre of the 1990s. Balancing onscreen violence with psychological drama and complex sexual politics, these variations on the slasher genre profiled serial killers within a real world context. Clarice Starling (Jodie Foster) is a young FBI trainee on the trail of Buffalo Bill, a serial killer who flays his victims for the most macabre dressmaking project. Starling's search leads her to undertake a behavioural profile of the cunning Dr Hannibal Lecter (Anthony Hopkins), another serial killer who prides himself on once having eaten the liver of a census taker with some fava beans and a nice Chianti! After Lecter provides a successful clue towards the increasingly desperate investigation, Starling agrees to trade personal information for more clues. Based on the best-selling novel by Thomas Harris, The Silence of the Lambs received Oscars for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Actor and Best Actress at the 1992 Academy Awards.
