About
In The Volunteer, Ralph Richardson gives a virtuoso performance as the narrator of the fictional story of Fred (Pat McGrath), a clumsy dresser who is turned into a distinguished military officer over the course of this Fleet Air Arm recruitment film. The Archers demonstrate myriad possibilities in making a propaganda film, taking a playful glide between fiction and documentary, from featuring cameos of famed actors in a scene at the Denham studios, to placing Fred in training with genuine Fleet Air Arm members, and using real footage of an army mission in Algiers - a film within the film makes it all the more whimsical and self-referential.
The Volunteer will screen from an imported 35mm print.
