About
Shot at the 1981 Theater der Welt festival in Köln, Theatre in Trance is a documentary observing the avant-garde theatre groups and dance troupes that performed there over two weeks, including Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch. Fassbinder frames the footage with a narration by him from Antonin Artaud's The Theatre and Its Double (1938), a reflection on the role of theatre. Shot just a year before his death, Theatre in Trance was Fassbinder's only documentary.
