Krzysztof Kieślowski rounds out his 'Three Colours Trilogy' with mystery/drama/romance Red.

With its title colour evoking love, passion and danger, the film’s heroine is aptly named Valentine (Irène Jacob). A French model living in Geneva, she unexpectedly meets a lonely curmudgeon (Jean-Louis Trintignant) after she hits his dog with her car. The unnamed character is a retired judge, whose outward callousness belies loss, regret and an almost crippling empathy.

Fraternité – the ‘red’ of the French flag – translates as ‘brotherhood’, which can perhaps be better understood in this film as ‘togetherness’. Valentine and the judge’s strange friendship, and the parallel storyline of young judge Auguste (Jean-Pierre Lorit), suggest our interconnectedness in experiencing uncertain, misplaced and lost loves.
