Join us for a fascinating In Conversation event with musician-composer Eiko Ishibashi and producer Satoshi Takata, as part of 'Asia Pacific Triennial Cinema: Ryusuke Hamaguchi' and 'GIFT: A Live Score by Eiko Ishibashi X Film by Ryusuke Hamaguchi'.

Eiko Ishibashi is a Japanese composer and multi-instrumentalist. Her work has ranged from singer-songwriter albums to scores for film, television, theatre and exhibitions. She composed the acclaimed score for the Academy Award-winning Drive My Car 2021, for which she won 'Best Original Music' at the Asian Film Awards. In 2023, she composed the soundtrack for Hamaguchi's film Evil Does Not Exist and unveiled the new project GIFT. This work features a silent film by Hamaguchi, which was specially created to accompany her live performance. The Australian Cinémathèque is proud to present the Australian premiere of GIFT as part of Asia Pacific Triennial Cinema.

Satoshi Takata is a Japanese film producer. His first production was Hamaguchi's award-winning Happy Hour 2015, a five-hour chronicle of the lives of four women in their thirties. Since then, he has continued to collaborate with Hamaguchi, producing four more celebrated works: Heaven is Still Far Away 2016, Wheel of Fortune and Fantasy 2021, Evil Does Not Exist and GIFT. He has produced films that have screened at the Venice Film Festival, the Berlin International Film Festival and the Locarno Film Festival.

The conversation will be moderated by artist, composer and curator Lawrence English, founder of the record label and multi-arts organisation Room40.
